Writer's Block: Drawing a blank

Happy Fourth of July and belated Canada Day, everyone! :D

[Error: unknown template qotd]
Probably. I don't remember.

Saw Chicago (the movie) the other day. I knew I'd been missing out by not having seen it before. Amazing, amazing movie. I love the decision to have the songs all be dream sequences - it allows for some awesome elaborate staging, and the songs themselves have this hypnotic quality that fits with that and with the whole unsettling feel of it. Basically, really good movie. Also Queen Latifah is hot, my god. *straight, really*

Now it's time for me to make some observations I've picked up recently about characters and Japanese pronouns.
- Apparently Bowser (or, well, Koopa) uses wagahai (as in Wagahai wa Neko de Aru). He definitely seemed like an ore-sama to me. I wonder why they went with the more old-fashioned pronoun? :|a
- Italy's apparently an ore, which strikes me as very unusual. I'd have pegged him as boku for sure (though I admit I may possibly be influenced by the whole "Boku Hetalia" thing).
- Yoruichi uses washi? I knew she was old, but...
- Katara's apparently a boku in the Japanese dub of Avatar. That is awesome.
- And the thing that inspired me to look up a few of these was the Homestuck Japanese translation project. Sooooo coooool man. It's not very far along yet, but check out the character pages to see how their pronouns and typing quirks are being translated. A couple highlights: each of the kids uses a different one of the four basic pronouns; Terezi's 413 thing translates perfectly due to the Japanese love of numerical wordplay (and her laugh becomes 1111, or "hihihihi"); and Nepeta calls herself "Nepeta-chan", which is adorable. Seriously, check it out. :D

One day I will make a list of every character in my favorite Japanese media and the pronouns they all use. :|a

Day 15: A character you’d be best friends with.

Hmm, this is a tough one. I can't imagine notbeing bros with Mimi, so let's throw her in here. I'd like to be best friends with Jou and Ken, but I worry they'd think I was weird. Since I sort of am. [livejournal.com profile] birdboy2000 thinks I would get along with Koushirou and maybe I would even though he is too smart for me. I'd probably have a lot of fun nerding with Miyako too. Oh, and let's not forget Gomamon. BASICALLY I WOULD HAVE A LOT OF FRIENDS OKAY. (i hope)

Day 16: A character you would not get along with.

Can't imagine we'd get along too well.

Okay, if we're talking among the kids, probably one of the antisocial ones like Kouji or Ruki or something. Though I suppose they got better about it.

No picspams today either. :( Too many characters, sorry. Not sure how I would go about it. Though if you have an idea you can let me know.

Four days till Connecticon!

You'd so get along with Miyako.

I agree. We are both nerds and fangirls. :D

Oh hey, a good place for me to continue practicing reading and translating Japanese! And, since it ties in to something I'm interested in (Homestuck in this case) I'll probably pick things up more quickly!

Also, I totally use "boku", it felt weird in Japanese class to have to fix it to "watashi".

[identity profile] vethica.livejournal.com 2011-07-04 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes that was my thought too. I hope you enjoy it! :D

Yeah I know man, but it's kind of awkward for foreigners to use boku and stuff, right? Whatever wwhatever I am just glad I'm solidly a watashi so I do not have this conflict. :P

[identity profile] cheshirecgrin.livejournal.com 2011-07-04 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure if it's more awkward or what, but my teacher was really really big on following all the rules exactly and everyone should only use "watashi" and never use the slang/shortened forms of verbs besides "desu". Even the phrases we would only say to people we knew pretty well she only taught the ridiculously polite versions.

God I wish I knew more about Japanese. It's such a cool language, so many nuances!

Katara as a bokuko is awesome. Also I think Toph could totally get away with occasionally calling herself oresama. She's earned it.

What is Vriska's pronoun?

oh man sorry for for taking so long to reply @_@

[identity profile] vethica.livejournal.com 2011-07-11 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Dude, I know. I love Japanese. :D Maybe you could try learning it sometime? Unless you do not have time which I totally understand. If I had more time I'd actually be putting some effort into learning Finnish. :B

Oh man I knowww. You would not really think she would be one from looking at her, but that just makes it more awesome. At least to me. ._. And I do not know what pronoun Toph uses but dude, oresama would be perfect for her. If Masaru Daimon can use it, why not her?

Vriska is ora, apparently because she's a pirate. Personally I associate ora with Son Goku and am not sure what it has to do with pirates, but who cares, it totally works for her. :B

Probably. I don't remember.

I lol'd.

Oh, Chicago! I love that movie. So much. I haven't seen it in years, though, and now I want to again. I've thought that it just nailed the media circus that builds around a high profile trial.

I've never seen the broadway musical or the original play performed live, but that would be a treat. I think I did see the 1942 Ginger Rogers movie Roxie Hart on TV once, but I didn't watch very much of it.

And of course, the girl only spoke Hungarian was the only on that block that was innocent, but she was the onee who got the noose in the end. That part always breaks my heart. :(

Interesting bit about Bowser. He also struck me as the type who would refer to himself as ore-sama. o_O

I am also sorry that this reply is so late

Heh, thanks. It amused me too. :P

You should definitely see it again! I want to see it again myself and I only saw it like a week ago. Sooooo gooooood man. I'd love to see it on stage as well also. Never seen the original play or movie, and I probably would not like them as much without the songs, but in any case I ought to check them out. :|a (Also oh man the Hungarian. ;_;)

Yeah, I totally agree. I'd really like to see some reasoning behind his use of wagahai. Maybe all the princesses and castles means it is a more old-fashioned setting? I do not know, quite honestly.
